5 Common Dental Emergencies

If you’ve made it to this page, you’re probably experiencing a dental emergency. At our practice, we offer same-day appointments to help ease your discomfort.

During a dental emergency, it’s important to stay calm. Below, you can read more about some of the most common dental emergencies we treat.

Chipped or Broken Tooth

Accidents happen and accidents can cause damage to your teeth. A chipped or broken tooth is especially common for athletes, as sports injuries are quite common. If your tooth has been chipped or broken, see a dentist as soon as possible. The sooner you go in, the better chance you have of saving that tooth. In the meantime, use a cold compress on your face to reduce any swelling.

You should also avoid chewing on that side of your mouth. This will prevent further damage.

Lost Filling or Dental Crown

When you lose a filling or dental filling, your tooth is more vulnerable to decay. You should take care of the tooth immediately with a filling or crown.

Another dental emergency is losing a crown or a dental bridge. While you cannot replace a crown or dental bridge on your own, you can temporarily fix the problem with dental cement or denture adhesive.

Abscess

An abscess is an infection that has spread below a tooth’s gum line. It causes severe pain, especially when exposed to heat or cold. An abscess should be addressed as soon as possible. A dentist can drain the abscess and prescribe antibiotics to treat the infection.

Knocked-Out Tooth

A knocked-out tooth is an emergency! Be sure to rinse it with water, place it back in its socket and call your dentist as soon as possible. While waiting for your appointment, you can rinse your mouth with salt water, use a cold compress or ice pack to reduce swelling and avoid touching, moving, or scrubbing the knocked-out tooth.

Toothache

A toothache can be caused by a variety of issues, such as tooth decay, gum disease, or an abscessed tooth. If you are experiencing a toothache, rinse your mouth with warm water and use a cold compress to reduce swelling. If the pain is severe, you can take an over-the-counter medication advised by the dentist.
